Distance Learning Must Haves

Since we started distance learning a few weeks ago (or months… I’ve honestly lost track), I have discovered the must haves that make distance learning work for me! Don’t get me wrong…I know that the only real must haves for distance learning are a teacher, a computer, and a student, but these other items make me feel more willing to work and make me feel more comfortable during this uncomfortable time. So, here’s my list!

Blue Light Glasses

Blue light glasses have been around for a while, but I never really thought much about them. But, when we moved to online learning, I found myself staring at screens a lot more. I use them for filming videos, Zoom meetings, creating lessons, grading lessons, and so much more. So, I decided to get myself some blue light glasses and they are game changers! I use them all the time now and definitely notice when I’m not. These are a must have!

Snacks!!!

Alright, before you close this window because you think I’m joking, hear me out! I will find any excuse not to get work done at home. “I need to run some laundry”, “I should make my bed”, “I haven’t vacuumed in a while, maybe I should dust the blinds.” But, my most used procrastination technique is “getting a snack.” Because of this, I eliminate that excuse by already having a snack where I’m working! I have been loving eating fruits and veggies because I still feel like I’m eating healthy. But my absolute favorite work snack right now are Cheese Whisps! No, this is not sponsored. No, they do not know that I love them so much (but, I do)! I just honestly love these things!

Same thing goes for drinks. “I’m thirsty! I should go to the kitchen and get a drink. While I’m in there I should wash the dishes and check all the labels in my fridge to make sure that mustard isn’t expired.” No! Eliminate the procrastination, get yourself a coffee and some sparkling water, sit your booty down and get some work done!

Ring Light

This is something I never thought I would be fancy enough to own. Turns out they aren’t that fancy, but they are really useful! My house doesn’t have the best lighting and I find that I have motivation to make videos at night. Thus, a ring light has changed my teaching video game! It allows me to make videos in any room in my house without having to worry about lighting! It makes it so my kids can actually see what I am doing, rather than just hearing the distant voice in the darkness. A little dramatic? Maybe, but you get my point.

Small Whiteboard or Clipboard

I am not somebody who has a whiteboard hanging in their house. Now that I am thinking about it, I’m surprised I don’t! I am not able to use my shower wall or washing machine like other distance learning teachers, so I use my little handheld version. It has come in so handy with doing word study lessons, math demonstrations, and mostly for my directed drawing lessons! This adorable mini easel is from my classroom, so my students feel a sense of familiarity when I use it. Maybe I’ll even use it for pictionary on our next Zoom meeting.

Comfort!

The last thing that I need are things to make me feel comfy. Anyone else feel more productive when they are comfy?!? Besides a comfy outfit (check out my blog post about Zoom approved outfits for ideas) I love to have a cozy blanket when I work. It cushions my bottom, keeps me warm, and makes me feel at peace.
